My final pitch for what I want to complete in this class along with what seems possible to do within a semester long time frame is to at minimum design, build and create a front fork rack for a bicycle as well as a set of small bike bags to accompany it. This project will involve:
- Learning to work with steel and aluminum
- pipe bending
- welding and brazing metals
- adding brazeons
- learning pattern making for fabrics
- forming an understanding of both the different uses and
benefits of different fabrics and metals in the construction process.
- creation of a simple mechanism that will connect the bike bags to the bike rack.
- to create something unique to me, inspired by what already exists but not copying, though this project is just to learn the fundamentals of working with these materials I still want to create something innovative in the world of bike packing.
IF there is enough time and working with these materials proves easier than anticipated then I will expand the project into also creating a rear rack, a centre frame bag, and rear bags in that order.
Rough Outline of project steps:
W1
Done
W2
Done
W3
Have a finalized sketch of project + materials needed
W4
work with metal shop to understand fabrication process and how to work with materials
W5
First attempt at welding/ brazing
W6
continue welding and brazing,
begin working on bike bags
W7
welding and brazing, bike bags
W8
Project in progress
hopefully have an almost completely finished working front rack, bags almost complete
W9
depending on progress begin working on rear rack, bags complete
W10
continue as far as possible
W11
